Modal dialogs are useful for focused tasks, but they are also one of the most abused patterns in interface design. A well-designed modal should have a clear purpose that cannot be accomplished inline. Start with a descriptive title so users immediately understand why the modal appeared. Provide a visible and keyboard-accessible close mechanism, and make sure focus is trapped inside the modal while it is open. Use a semi-transparent backdrop to maintain context. Keep the content minimal and action-oriented. After the modal closes, return focus to the element that triggered it. Test with screen readers and keyboard navigation to ensure the experience is smooth. If your modal asks for confirmation, make the destructive action visually distinct. Good modals respect the user’s time and attention.
